How many times have we passed Teen Murti roundabout in Chanakyapuri which connects Teen Murti Marg with South Avenue, Kushak Road and Mother Teresa Crescent and mostly we miss seeing this beautiful war memorial which is a tribute to those soldiers and officers of cavalry and armoured regiments of Indian Army who laid down their lives during World War I.

These army officers belonged to Indian Princely States of Hyderabad, Mysore and Jodhpur with detachments from Bhavnagar, Kashmir and Kathiawar and acquitted themselves gloriously bravely in the battlefields of Sinai, Palestine and Syria.

The Close up of the beautiful Statue in the Memorial. |
This beautiful Memorial has three statues of soldiers in their cavalry uniforms from states of Hyderabad, Mysore and Jodhpur. These statues, made of stone and bronze were made by sculptor Leonard Jennings in 1922. This memorial was in front of the building which was at that time called Flagstaff House, being the residence of Commander-in-Chief of India. After Independence this became the residence of the First Prime Minister of India, Jawahar Lal Nehru and presently houses Nehru Memorial Museum and Library.
There is a cenotaph that celebrates the battle of Haifa, the last Imperial Service Cavalry charge on 23 Sep 1918 which is still celebrated by the Indian Army as Haifa Day !
ReplyDeleteThe Teen Murtis represent dismounted sowar from each of the regiments that participated in the charge - the Jodhpur Lancers who led it, the Hyderabad Lancers and the Mysore Lancers. These have been amalgamated into a single mounted regiment now, the 61st Cavalry.
